Denver's Mexican food scene
Mexican is Denver's most listed cuisine, and the city's Mexican and Mexican-American roots run deep. You'll find it everywhere, but a few areas stand out:
- Southwest Denver has more Mexican restaurants than any other part of the city on our site. That includes Westwood, Barnum and Mar Lee, along Federal Boulevard and Morrison Road.
- The Northside mixes long-running family spots with newer restaurants, in the Highlands, Sunnyside and Chaffee Park.
- La Alma/Lincoln Park and the Santa Fe Drive area, one of Denver's historic Chicano neighborhoods, have neighborhood cafés and classic Mexican cooking.
- Downtown and LoDo lean toward modern Mexican, cantinas and margarita bars.
- Montbello and far northeast Denver have a strong cluster of taquerias and family restaurants.
What to order
- Green chile. Colorado-style green chile is usually made with pork and is often smothered over burritos. Many places sell it by the quart.
- Breakfast burritos. Many taquerias open early, and a green-chile-smothered breakfast burrito is a Denver tradition.
- Tacos. Look for al pastor, carnitas, lengua and birria. Birria often comes with consommé for dipping.
- Tamales. Tamales are sold year-round, and many families order them by the dozen for the holidays.
- Menudo and pozole. These soups are a weekend specialty at many family-run restaurants.
- Mariscos. Ceviche, shrimp cocktails and aguachile are served at seafood-focused spots.
Regional Mexican, Tex-Mex or New Mexican?
Denver's Mexican restaurants cover several styles:
- Regional Mexican kitchens cook dishes from specific states such as Jalisco, Michoacán, Puebla or Chihuahua.
- Tex-Mex leans on cheese, combination plates and fajitas.
- New Mexican and Southern Colorado cooking features red and green chile.
When you filter for Authentic, you'll see restaurants that describe themselves that way. We don't decide which ones are authentic.
