Boulder Food Guide

Boulder's dining scene is easier to read than it first appears, and our directory gives a clear picture of it. The figures here come from our listings: 563 places in total, and 73 percent of them independently owned. That share matters if you're choosing where to eat. Most of what you'll find is independently owned rather than part of a chain, though the chains are present, especially around Twenty Ninth Street, an open-air lifestyle center that opened on October 13, 2006, on the site of the old Crossroads Mall.

The category counts show where the everyday eating happens. Cafes and coffee lead with 65 listings, followed by 56 general restaurants, 45 bakery and dessert spots, and 40 fast food places. Mexican has 34 listings and pizza has 33, then 25 breweries and distilleries, 23 breakfast and brunch spots, and 22 each for salads and health food, bars and nightlife, sushi and Japanese, and American. Fast food has 40 listings, so quick meals are easy to find, and 103 listings offer delivery. Sit-down dining is well represented too: 88 listings mention private dining or events. Coffee is mentioned in 70 listings, pizza in 42, craft beer in 34, breakfast burritos in 26, tacos in 21, and green chile in 13.

Some practical details shape a night out. Outdoor seating appears in 57 listings and happy hours in 49, so a patio drink before dinner is an option. Only 130 listings post their hours, so check before you go, especially for late dining, since just 11 list late-night service. For dietary needs, 108 listings mention gluten-free options, 103 mention vegetarian options, and 75 mention vegan options. There are 9 food trucks and one food hall, Avanti Food And Beverage Boulder, for grazing across several kitchens.

The neighborhoods give the numbers a map. Pearl Street Mall, four pedestrian blocks from 11th to 15th Streets dedicated on August 6, 1977, is the historic downtown core. University Hill, around 13th Street near CU Boulder, is known for pizza and live music. Gunbarrel, rezoned to allow on-site dining at breweries, distilleries and wineries, is home to Avery Brewing's smoked-meat-focused restaurant. North Boulder's NoBo Art District is becoming a hangout with new breweries and wineries, and East Boulder is mixing cutting-edge cuisine with burgeoning breweries. The city's food roots show up in the Boulder County Farmers Market, held at 13th Street and Canyon Boulevard since 1987, and in Boulder Beer Company, founded in 1979, which calls itself Colorado's first craft brewery.
